From humble storefront beginnings in 1971 on a derelict corner of northwest Portland, Oregon, Powell's Books has grown into one of the world's great bookstores, with seven locations in the Portland metropolitan area.

Powell's is America's largest independent bookstore carrying new, used, and out of print titles. Local students typically find the text books they need when their school store is sold out. They stock 122 major subject areas and more than 3,500 subsections for a whopping total of over 1 million books (the average bookstore has about 25,000).
